How to protect your videos: private links, embeds and downloads
Updated: November 3, 2026
No website can stop someone from recording their screen 100% of the time, but you can make it much harder for anyone who wants to copy, download or re-upload your videos. These are the measures that actually work and how to apply them on Dembed.
1. Links that can’t be guessed
Every Dembed video has a random ID (for example, v_8fK2xQ9mLp3a). There’s no public list or video search, and playback pages aren’t indexed by Google: only people with the link get in.
2. Signed file URLs that expire
The player never shows the file’s real address. It uses signed links that expire after a few hours, so copying the video URL from the browser doesn’t work for sharing it later or hotlinking it from another site.
3. You decide whether it can be downloaded
- Turn downloads on or off for each video from the dashboard.
- If you turn them on, you choose the available qualities; free viewers wait through a short countdown.
- If you turn them off, the button disappears and the download link doesn’t work.
4. Your brand on the player
Add your logo or channel name as a watermark, linking to your site. If someone records the screen or shares the video, your brand goes with it and people know where it came from.
5. Share wisely
- For a course or a closed group, share the link only inside your platform, group or email.
- For your site, use the iframe instead of the direct link: viewers watch the video on your page.
- If a link has leaked, you can delete the video and upload it again: it gets a new link.
6. If someone re-uploads your video
If you find your content uploaded without permission on Dembed, use the video’s “Report” button or the Copyright Policy procedure. If it’s on another platform, follow its copyright takedown process (DMCA or equivalent) with a link to your original as evidence.
