How to send a video on WhatsApp without losing quality
Updated: October 28, 2026
If you’ve ever sent a video on WhatsApp and it looked blurry on the other end, it’s not your imagination: the app compresses videos to make them smaller. Fortunately there are ways around it. Here are three, from the simplest to the one that works best for long or heavy videos.
Why WhatsApp compresses videos
To save data and storage, WhatsApp lowers the resolution and bitrate of videos sent as media, and limits their size. The result is a much lighter file but less sharp, especially in dark or fast-moving footage.
Option 1: turn on HD quality
In recent versions of the app, an “HD” button appears at the top when you attach a video. Turn it on before sending. Quality improves, but there’s still compression and a size limit.
Option 2: send it as a document
- 1In the chat, tap the paperclip (attach) and choose “Document” instead of “Gallery”.
- 2Find the video file and send it.
- 3It arrives as-is, uncompressed, though the other person has to download it entirely to watch it and it takes up space on their phone.
Option 3: share a link (best for long videos)
Upload the video to Dembed and send the link on WhatsApp. The chat shows the thumbnail and title, and tapping it plays the video instantly in the browser, at original quality adapted to the connection. It takes no space on anyone’s phone and works for videos up to 20 GB.
- No WhatsApp compression.
- No downloading or using up storage.
- Send it to groups and statuses without re-sending the file.
- See how many times it was watched.
